To commemorate the historic Jan. 31, 1865, approval of the 13th Amendment by the U.S. House of Representatives, which abolished slavery, history professor and Civil War scholar Carl Guarneri will discuss Steven Spielberg's acclaimed movie "Lincoln."

The Walnut Creek Library Foundation will host a special evening of music and poetry that speak to the loyalties and bravery of the people of the American Civil War. Jan. 23, Walnut Creek Library, 1644 N. Broadway, Walnut Creek. Free.

“Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War,” a national traveling exhibition opens at the Walnut Creek Library Dec. 14, 2012, and runs through Feb. 8, 2013. The "Lincoln at the Library" Open House kicks off the exhibit's 7-week stay.
